Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

“It is not the environmental trigger or situation that causes a person’s emotional response; rather it is what the person thinks about these events that leads to their emotional reaction.”

This is the central tenet of many therapies that fall under the “umbrella term” of cognitive behavioural therapy.
Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) aims to help people change their “cognitions” (i.e., their ideas, beliefs and actions) so that they can better manage their emotions when faced with novel or unexpected challenges.

Acceptance & Commitment Therapy

Behavioural therapy with an emphasis on “values-guided action” is known as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Change may be guided, motivated and inspired by our underlying core values. ACT is all about “mindful actions”, or things you do while paying close attention.

“Acceptance” of things beyond our control and “commitment” to meaningful acts are the central themes.
